Hand-sculpted bas relief tile, Kali, by Tammy Vitale of Tam’s Originals
Busy day ahead. And already.
Ran around this morning collecting publications (mostly Artella, but also Calvert Life and the local trails book) I’m in to use for my presentation at Univerity of Maryland Baltimore Campus (UMBC) Women’s Center today. I am closing out a 3 month show there and they asked me to do a talk. I already scrounged up an old portfolio. And decided to take some fish and word tiles. I think people who show up for these talks do so because they are already artists or want to be. I plan to go around the room and ask people why they came so I can tailor my talk to their needs. Takes a lot of stress off my trying to figure out what they really want. And opens up discussion which means I don’t have to talk as much but can facilitate instead, which works as well as anything for me. I will let you know how it goes.
Speak of Artella, I just received an invitation to be in their next issue. They want to use Demeter’s Despair (here) and have paired it with a breath-taking poem (that’s what they do. Their full title is Artella Words and Art, and they pair words and art. No advertising. An amazing magazine and website, full of wonderfully creative ideas and sharing. Do check it out!).
Do you know the story of Demeter? Her daughter, Persephone was snatched by Hades and taken to the underworld. Demeter, who is an earth goddess, laid waste to the land and would allow nothing to grow. Zeus, head god, finally persuaded Hades to let Persephone return but Hades persuaded her to eat a pomegranite and so she must return to him 6 months of the year….why we have winter (very short version).
Managed to finally post over at myspace – haven’t been there since last Thursday. If I’m going to be in the studio, something has to give.
thought for the day: We mirror what is around us. If we walk into a red room, we become red. If we are always in a group of angry people, it is hard not to become angry. If we are with someone who is clear, our mind reflets that back and we become clearer. Natalie Goldberg, Long Quiet Highway: Waking Up In America

Now, there are some who think Persephone wasn't snatched but that her Dad, Zeus agreed to let Hades marry Persephone. Zeus was just not about to let Demeter know – cause she had a temper. This is the greater mystery of the Eleusian mysteries, and your comments are timely – they were celebrated in the 3rd week of September. You have to love synchronicity!
We had ritual Saturday, and darned if this story wasn't the one we used:)
UMBC is a very neat place – my son graduated from there.
