Shadow Wymyn: Prototype, Spirit Dance; mixed media wall sculpture with hand made ceramic face; 20"t x 7.5 " w, by Tammy Vitale.
Here is what I worked on all day yesterday: my first finished Shadow Wymyn who has yet to be named [editor’s note: wrong – she named herself right after I spell checked this document!]. I haven’t quite decided how to give them individual names yet [obviously I won’t; they will, as always, name themselves]. And she really isn’t finished as my idea for her is that she will be mounted on a painted canvass (no, I don’t know how I’m going to do that yet) from which she can be unhung (2 pieces for the price of 1) that will have totem animals on it. This particular piece I’m thinking will have a horse (over her head), a crow and a wolf simply because I know how to paint all of them easily. I want to work in a simply mandala behind her and then make a print of it and attach it to the doll too. Ambitious for me – usually I’m happy that a piece is finished and ready to move on to the next thing, and while I am ready to move on to the next thing, I want to do this one right – the way she keeps presenting herself to me in the waking morning hours. She has a definite idea of how she wishes to be in the world and I am quite sure if I don’t follow the energy, the energy will not leave me alone until I do it that way anyhow, so I might as well take my time and do it right the first go through. Perhaps then she will give herself a name [I get that she’s very happy I’m following the energy and thus ready to take on her name.]
I’m working on tags today also. Used the tags I purchased from Michaels to cut more tags from cover stock I have here and will shortly be thinking about how to finish tags for Ugly Fish and Wylde Women, some of which I want to put out at a show this weekend. If I can get the process nailed down, then it will simply be something I automatically crank through as I finish pieces. It’s just the creating and getting in place that takes time and energy (what else is new).
Making Shadow Wymyn I discovered that packaged Spanish Moss is dry and crackly – unlike that I used to gather live from the trees. This cause me to have to rethink hair for the Wylde Women. I didn’t buy any more hair like I used on the prototype so in order to finish this batch I will fall back on some nice yarn I have and think some more about it for the future.
If you have time to browse, check out the Sculpture Album I started uploading yesterday (left column). Little by little I’m getting my whole portfolio here on line. That makes me very happy.
I’d love to stay and chat, but I have a todo list for today which is extensive (which is why I have one at all). It developed itself during morning pages, so I’m paying attention to the fact that I should work through it. If I manage (it really is extensive) I will feel very satisfied by the time I fall into bed. Luck I work before 5 a.m. this morning!
thought for the day: We carry wisdom in our bodies. We carry memories and we carry, the medicine for what ails us. Julia Cameron, Finding Water
Note: we carry emotions too, sometimes long after we think we have "gotten over" them. And sometimes the body chooses to release them quite unexpectedly. Which sometimes creates dis-ease. I am currently negotiating with my body about this. Anyone ever done acupuncture? Does it hurt?

Your Shadow Wymyn is just perfect-I love everything about her! That's the kind of art that I can easily see living in my house. Where/when will you be selling her?
Like this alot. Her face reminds me of the moon. I like the different textures you use to create such expressive pieces and the earthtone color scheme.
I read The Artist's Way a long time ago, so entranced I sat down on the library floor at the time reading a couple of chapters. Since having found many of you via Poetry Thursday or Sunday Scribblings, I hope Finding Water comes into my library soon.
Your art is very beautiful. I feel grateful to be "meeting" so many talented women through Finding Water!
Don't you love it when your art speaks to you and tells you it's name. That's when you can tell you are in the right place to be creating.
Can't wait to see how this Wylde Woman grows to include her totem – it sounds fantastic!
As for acupuncture, I haven't personally – but those close to me who have, said it's a bit prickly at first, then produces a "buzz" similar to what others here have described.
I've had lots of acupuncture and wish I hadn't… it can do real damage to your energy system if you are a type that's hard to read… I was… and so was one of my brothers…
Would you like me to send you some distance healing – I don't charge – and I do test carefully for permission to send what I send!
Let me know, I only work with both conscious and energy permission.
a big thank you to leah and caron for sharing about acupuntcure…i would hope i'd get the relaxing kind since i pretty much manage to buzz on my own!
i've had acupuncture and sometimes it would hurt a little bit for a second, but mostly it didn't. there are different types of treatments, some can make you buzzy and some can make you very relaxed. it was a very interesting experience and one i may try again. i went once a week for a few months and it really helped with my migraines.
WOW!!!!! The design for your Shadow Wymyn sounds AMAZING!!!! Can't wait to see the end result!!! :o)
I did acupuncture once. It didn't hurt, exactly – a little pinprick at first. I didn't like the sensation, though – kind of a "buzzing" of my nerves. Normally I can breathe, and relax into a situation, but couldn't with that. If your body's telling you to try it, go with that.
EFT is very powerful and effective! http://www.emofree.com
A horse, a crow (raven) AND a wolf? Hmmm…perhaps this one has to live at my house.
