Mask: Oonagh, glazed clay, hand sculpted by Tammy Vitale
This is one of those days I’m having a hard time getting started. There’s snow outside and I seem to want to linger about the windows with a cup of very hot coffee and be dreamy. PlumpieMousie has been busy and I have found some wonderful sites for you to visit through her links. If you have never visited PlumpieMousie’s site, it is absolutely enchanting, and has something for everyone, including the very literary Old Woman.
Lucky for me,
Here are some amazing vases from the years c.12,000 – 300 BCE. Think about that. This is what has me making for the studio to try out some of these forms with slab in raku clay. I don’t know that I’ll get anywhere close to these, but they sure are an inspiration. You can find more at the wikipedia site on the Jomon People.
Next is a site on the work of Niki de Saint Phalle who does large women/public works, many covered in tiles. This is a real inspiration toward whatever it is I have been moving toward for a year but seem afraid to try. Husband points out I don’t like doing construction to make my pieces. But I realize, now, that I am limiting myself by not at least trying to make something large. And I have an artist friend who also wants to make something large (and in fact has, designing the St. Mary’s County heron for school arts fund raising – I can’t find anything on line. Perhaps I’ll go collect photos some day).
Finally, here’s another lovely fantasy creation by an artist in New Jersey: Luna Parc. Husband bought me one of his dragon pins (lapel art) one year for our anniversary when we stopped at a wayside art spot randomly while traveling and discovered his work right after my then boss had introduced me to this web site. We figured it was meant to be.

That is SOOOOOO true. lol
I love the mischievous look about this mask, makes me think of magical mythical beings, Puck and sylphs…
I'm going to have to come back to this and investigate those very intriguing sounding links – thank you!
Thanks for the intro to PlumpieMousie, Tammy. Absolutely fascinating.
Tammy: What an incredible mask!!! Is she still on the market? $$$????
I love having your masks around my home here in HOlland…..so many senses of women through time and space. Let me know. Sara
If I had snow outside I'd be out there sledging! But then we get one snowy day worth sledging in about once a decade it seems… and we are overdue for one now!
Those ancient vases are amazing. I get inspired by cave and rock art the same way you describe how these effect you.
