Art Every Day Month 2018 (AEDM2018) and NaNoWriMo 2018 – Day 4

Art Every Day Month 2018 (AEDM2018)

Today’s offering for Art Every Day Month is a beaded embroidery applique on the back hem of the denim dusterleft side.  It will be mirrored on the right.  I had anticipated finishing one a day but it looks to me like it’s going to take a minimum of two days each side, and that’s around the edges.  I will need to go back and tack in the middle.  I also need to find a thimble – no callus on my pushing finger anymore and it’s getting sore!

You can see in the “before” picture that a button is missing.  I didn’t even know that – thought it was just unbuttoned.  So another part of this will be to find new buttons – probably eclectic, maybe even from my Mom’s button box which would be lovely.

I’ve played with buttons in that box my whole life.  She never threw anything away without first cutting off the buttons.  Even then most of it was reused.  I still have a (falling apart) baby quilt made from scraps from her and her sisters’ dresses.  When I made grandson’s quilt, I used material from both sides of the family.  Poor granddaughter didn’t get one.  I was pretty much quilted out by the time she came along.

NaNoWriMo 2018

1,649 words for a total of 14,814.

My goal is 2k a day.  Yesterday I followed up on a posted event at a local library and met two locals who are also participating.  We mostly wrote for 2 hours but spent the last 15 minutes chatting.  One of the writers is also an artist.  I hope to get to know her better as she is an Upper Marlboro resident, like me.  Yay!

I am learning to describe.  I think in pictures and in the past I realize that I don’t always adequately describe the pictures.  When you are aiming for a word count, over description is good.  Better to have too much and cut away then have to recreate the energy and add to, I say. So this practice is helping me to learn how to craft my gift.  Oh, and a Dodo showed up yesterday to join the white wolf and the dragon.  I am as surprised as anyone about the things that happen.  I’m also learning about feng sui since one of the characters apparently practices it for protection of her home base.  Who knew?  I didn’t even know this particular character was going to stick around.  She started as a connecting filler and has since become a major player.  Writing is definitely an adventure!

  • Jackie – yes, I am finding all of my characters (the ones I introduced and the ones that introducing themselves to me) surprising – especially when I push for number count. Seems that’s when they get adventurous. 😉

Rita – I know how you produce. I don’t think you’ll have any problem keeping up with me.

  • I also have a huge button supply–LOL!
    Really pretty work.
I don’t think I will be able to keep up with you this month–LOL! 😉

  • Your handwork is as beautiful as everything else you do. I’m a bit envious – I don’t trust myself with a needle – at all.

I’ll stick with metal and a torch and enjoy your work.

Isn’t it amazing what we come up with at NaNoWriMo? I’m doing about 1,500 daily and my main character just moved into a place I didn’t know she knew about. Nice of her to inform me.

So glad we’re doing both AEDM and NaNoWriMo!!!

  • Elizabeth – I think I see how you’re doing it – can’t wait to see the finish!

  • You remind me of your mom and her button box. Before I recycle fabric, I cut off the buttons, the labels, and if there are any, zippers. I use them in my mixed media art. Your duster is looking awesome. I suspect you will find enough buttons in your mother’s button box to turn the bottom into a thing of beauty.

You asked where I got the waxed linen. When I helped a friend clean out his mother’s shed, he had no idea what it was, but I did, so gladly took it off his hands.

By “encasing the fabric,” I meant I made a sort of hem around all three sides that were not the ones where the copper pipe was. These acted as barriers and helped keep the leaves and pennies from moving around a lot when I rolled the fabric around the copper pipe. I hope that explained what meant.

  • Erika – thank you!

  • Nigel – you noticed that, huh? 😉

  • A dodo, a wolf and a dragon? You keep eclectic company 🙂

    Wandered over from AEDM.

  • That is gorgeous!
