Ugly_fish_drying Ugly Fish, a new line, drying; ceramic wall sculpture by Tammy Vitale

I have learned, when browsing, that "ceramic" instead of "clay" will bring up lovely sculptures.  So I am changing my wording in my titles.

Here is Ugly Fish.  This is the 2nd one; 3 – 5 are good too.  One was a start and looks different than all the rest.  I like these fish better than the ones I’ve been making.  They take more time but are creatively more satisfying.  I even cannot wait to get back in the studio today to make more.  That is an excellent sign!

Here is Wylde Women #2 who will go out to whomever can help me make theseWylde_women_pear_shirt_finished  pieces into a collectible community through a really good connecting story.  She has a spiral and turquoise for her necklace.  I am thinking that I want to get stamps made with sayings.  I already have commercial stamps:  Live Love Laugh, Be the Change You Want to See in the World, and another.  I’m thinking that maybe stamping sayings on their skirts will be the way to go.  I’m also thinking of doing some crone faces (this face is youngish) with moss hair.  In fact, I may just Spanish moss all the hair from here on out simply because I don’t have to order it.  These first two have hair from packaging I got from a prize I won on line.  Storyline anyone?  Also, anyone have any good advice on making tags?  I’m stumped…Something that could hand from her hand, but not overwhelm?

Megan is now completely fired.  Here she is (there’s and arm, and some more "clothes" to fit onto the main torso).  I am gluing her together and then will have to Sculpture_large_megan_pieces figure how to get all that weight to stand up straight.  Once she is together, perhaps I will be better able to "see" how that might happen.  Yesterday I bought some chicken wire and ordered some plaster cloth to have at this "big thing" I’m after from another direction.  I can’t wait!

Three more Women came out of the kiln (here are two), and I finished the two that I fired and painted differently:  with stain and some ceramic cook in the over paint that I got from Michaels (and which they no longer carry).  I will save some to put up the next post, although I am creating now and shouldn’t have too much trouble having new work to post.  They are averaging about 25" tall.  I’m being told, when they are seen in person: "Wow, I didn’t know they were that big.  They didn’t look that big inWomen_2_finished_1 the picture."  This is a problem.  Other than posting the size, I don’t know how to ifx it.  Perhaps just taking them by themselves, where I can get somewhat closer and have them fill the frame, will make a difference.  These aren’t mounted yet.  Perhaps today.

Today’s todo list also includes writing my post for Sunday Creative Challenge at Create a Connection.  I will be writing about finding your secret name (that’s a teaser – be sure to check it out first thing tomorrow morning.  You can still see Last Sunday’s post right now).

And I started with morning pages this a.m. for our blog group working through Julia Cameron’s Finding Water using the website put up by Jessie and Leah.  I won’t be sharing the morning pages, but I’m doing this with morning pages and with writing around her "Divining Rod" sections.  I’ll be posting that writing over at myspace.  I haven’t been posting there at all lately, and this morning’s "aha" from the "Divining Rod" was so cool (as was the process of writing to it) that I want to go ahead and post it.  Maybe writing it a 2nd time will really engrave it on my subconscious!

thought for the day:  Anyone who has ever been able to sustain good work has had at least one person – and often many – who have believed in him or her.  We just don’t get to be competent human beings without a lot of different investments from others.  Fred Rogers, Life’s Journeys According to Mister Rogers:  Things to Remember Along the Way

  • re the size of the 25" tall women–perhaps you could include something in the picture that would imply a scale? Lots of times when I see pictures of jewelry online, there's a dime or a quarter in the picture to give an idea of size… I'm not sure what you could use that wouldn't distract (a piece of notebook paper would absolutely give scale but be incredibly ugly :). Hmmm. I'll think on it.

on the tags–do you want someone to design the tags, or to come up with the words to write on them?

  • the fish is a lot of fun. it looks like it is laying on a grill. 😉

  • oo, i love the aha's you've had with the divining rod! i'd comment there, but it gets too messy by connecting to my myspace page which i use for family connections, so i'll just comment here. i think that's a wonderful idea about the thesis. what exciting ahas you've had already! i wish i had more wylde women story ideas for you, but i'm drawing a big ole blank at the moment. the ugly fish is awesome!

  • Hi Tammy… getting caught up on my blogging, or atleast working on it! I LOVE your new fish… he has so much character! Just got a new book called Creative Concrete Ornaments for the Garden by Sherri Warner Hunter (2005)from a craft club. It has some wonderful photos, instructions and ideas for armatures for large and small scale projects… definitely worth the read. The library might have it. I saw one of your "Women" fridays and really liked it the photos do not do them justice!

  • Tammy, I'm sorry I missed you on the blogroll the first time around. But I've added you now! I was afraid I might have accidently missed someone (hopefully not too many!).

And, I gotta tell ya, I LOVE your "ugly fish"! I got up late…and am going to do my morning pages now. Happy Day 1 to you! 🙂

Do you know David Wiesner's books? I'm so glad I found them. There's one called Sector 7, that your fish reminded me of. Don't know if your comments allow links, but I'll try: http://tinyurl.com/2y3xu4 I love, love, love this book, and it's one that my oldest at 14 still picks up and explores. Well – at 41, so do I! LOL

About your women's size: is there any way to photograph them next to something that will show scale? Without being too distracting…
