Eagle American Eagle.  This one only has one wing and has been taken in and is being cared for by Clearwater Center in Prince Georges County, MD

Yesterday it rained all day – and boy did we need it.  It was also "wade-in" day at the Port Tobacco River Conservancy (website for the Conservancy here):  folks come together to wade into the river until they can’t see their sneakers – a very unscientific method for measuring water clarity.   Yesterday we waded in 18", last year 25".  And/but the rain was adding mud to the water so, like I said, it was very unscientific.

One great part of the day was these beautiful raptors that the Clearwater Nature Center brought down as part of an education program.  I can’t tell you how badly I wanted to touch!  But I didn’t, I just took a million pictures and am sharing them with you here.  The first two are of the horned owl (I missed it "winking" – would have been such a great shot!), the tiny but darling screech owl, and the barn owl (she’s almost blind – they think she got hit by a car.  I didn’t hear why the other two are in care).

For those who were a bit small to be wading into the river (we had a rescue boat there, even though most grownups didn’t get past their knees), the rain provided another sort of wade in.

thought for the day:  It is a challenge to avoid overextending oneself.  The essence of following Tao is to find the middle.  Those who follow avoid the extremes.  They seldom take absolute positions.  All things have their time and their place and the wise thread a path through the middle…even in trying to follow a middle path, there may be times when daring is called for.  Sometimes the correct decision is the one that incorporates some risk.  We have to accept that.  Then, we risk…only when necessary and return to more serene circumstances as quickly as we can.  Deng Ming-Dao, Everyday Tao:  Living with Balance an Harmony

  • amazing photos. my daughter has a thing for owls – she has a brussels griffon that sometimes has a whole owl look to it with its clipped ears, big eyes and tiny nose. she keeps hoping to find a way to have an owl in some way. she would love (!) to see this.
