Here are some of the finished projects from yesterday’s Clay 101 class in my studio.  We had a total of 7 folks in the end, and if the finished products are any measure, the class was a smashing success.

I’m rather out of the mood for writing much.  Haven’t had much down time:  sat all day at Friday’s Creek Gallery on Friday and then class yesterday which was only 3 hours but it wore me out (that’s the introvert side).  So I’m going to post a bunch of pictures from the class so you can enjoy it vicariously and let that be if for the day.

thought for the day:  We have a great deal of "artist-as-loner mythology."  It is as false as our mythology regarding the West. Cowboys didn’t settle the West.  Families did.  Communities did.  Similarly, art is made by artists who know and love other artists and other people.  When we think about who and what we love, we get ideas about who and what we would love to make…Modern life is restless…ritual and regularity are a part of how we commit to community…None of these community commitments requires training, and they all offer us an anchor in the changing seas of life.  All of us need a good dose of daily sweetness – the goodwill we put into life and the good cheer we draw from cherished familiar faces.  Artists may need community and companionship more, not less than other people.  Our projects can take a long time to incubate, develop, and mature.  In the meanwhile, we need a life and life needs us.  Jula Cameron, Walking in This World:  The Practical Art of Creativity

  • The class looks SOOOOOOOO fun!!!!

  • Looks like a very good class and a great turnout… congratulations, Tammy!! I am still chuckling on Jackie's brave comment "smashing success"… LOL!!

  • Karen – when I picked up the Z list all I did was copy, cut and paste. The mosaic: I received the html from another blogger who watched me try unsuccessfully to grab that. So any readers out there have any answers for Karen on grabbing the list without copying each individual link?

And thanks for the url to the website – I actually started looking today for a retreat for my birthday.

  • Oh, and while I'm wishing I was out on the East Coast, I'll mention to you that Art and Soul is having a retreat in Virginia this year–I went to Art and Soul in Monterey last year (my first art classes!) and had such a wonderful time. I don't know if any of these classes would interest you or not, but thought I'd tell you anyway. Here's the link:

  • This looks so wonderful! I wish I weren't all the way across the country from you or I'd come take a class, too!

On a side note: is there an easier way to grab the W-list for posting? I grabbed the list, but then had to come back to get each link…

  • Very brave of you to use the phrase "smashing success" to describe a clay class.

  • Hey there!

Great thoughts on artists needing to surround ourselves with others.

    i couldn't agree more.

As a children's writer, I feel I do my BEST when I get out there, and enjoy the world. then, I can create with the best of them!

    thanks!

  • Hello 🙂

Aah somewhat comforting to see I am not the only one who is not in the mood to write – must be the waning moon!

Love your thoughts about artists and community – it resonates with me.
